Who is an Upper Primary Teacher?

An Upper Primary teacher teaches students at Classes 6 to 8 in government schools and private institutes. Their involvement is crucial at the  foundational base of knowledge provision and preparation before higher education studies.

Upper Primary Teacher Eligibility in India

To become an Upper Primary Teacher, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

1. Educational Qualification

Candidates should have any one of the following qualifications:

1.Graduation with at least 50% marks and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)

2.Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) after 10+2 with at least 50% marks

3.B.El.Ed. (Bachelor of Elementary Education) – a 4-year integrated course

4.Post-Graduation with at least 55% marks and B.Ed. (Special Education)

2.Teacher Eligibility Test (TET)

Applicants must be eligible for a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) conducted by the Central Government (CTET) or State Governments (State TETs). The test gauges applicants’ adequacy in pedagogy, subject knowledge, and teaching abilities.

3. Age Limit

The upper age limit to apply for a teaching position is usually between 18 to 40 years, but government norms vary for the reserved categories providing age relaxation.

Exams to become an Upper Primary Teacher

To become eligible for teaching, applicants have to clear one of the following exams.

 CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test)➜Conducted by: CBSE

➜Paper II is meant for Upper Primary Teachers who teach classes 6-8

➜Subject areas include Child Development & Pedagogy, Language I and II, Mathematics/Science, and Social Studies
State TET (Teacher Eligibility Test)➜Conducted by the respective state education boards

➜Exam pattern is the same but focuses on the curriculum of the respective state
